This course explores the relationships between Hospitals, Physicians, and Insurers and their response to the call to deliver value-based care. The journey will start with the traditional role of the physician as an independent contractor with practice rights at a hospital but with no other relationship. Over time, and prodded by changes in reimbursement , hospitals now routinely engage in contracting, joint venturing ( such as forming Accountable Care Organizations ), and employing physicians pursuant to economic strategies and governed by legal rules that will be explored in this class. Also discussed will be the physician practice management opportunities and challenges presented by health insurers. Guest presenters representing diverse health care interests will be invited to participate in the course.
