DESCRIPTION
With the fault lines of the world’s civic, health, and ecological infrastructures in the headlines every day, now is the time to stretch your capacity to be part of the crucial solutions and innovations that will change outcomes for people and communities. This practicum course is targeted at students who hope to increase and practice their skills in the realm of social impact, sustainability, corporate social innovation, and civic engagement. Student teams will work on a real-life project with a company, nonprofit, or public entity. Deliverables will be robust, analytical, and professional-grade. Students interested in consulting, social innovation and leadership, and social finance will benefit from this class. For the fall of 2020, projects will include a range of engagements focused on market analysis, financial innovation and products, go-to-market strategy, and product development. Students will be placed on project teams based on their interests and backgrounds. *** Clients for team projects will include: (1) The State of Illinois – Innovative launch of a student loan fund. (2) The Chicago Corporate Coalition – Project to increase diversity in professional service firms. (3) Plant Chicago – Product and pricing strategy for subscription circular economy service. (4) Creci – Impact assessment and reporting tool development for SMEs. (5) Etnyre Corporation – Development and integration of sustainability goals and KPIs. (6) 180Demo – Market analysis for expansion and scale of employment start-up for current and former inmates. (7) Social Impact Now – Building the case for a FinTech Policy Sandbox in Minnesota. (8) Steans Family Foundation – Market and funding analysis for project to promote Black entrepreneurship in North Lawndale. (9) YWCA of Chicago – Research and analysis to help launch an initiative to help people on Chicago’s South become franchisees to build wealth for Black families.
