Social Innovation: Designing for Change (KPPI-452-0)

Description:
This experiential lab course combines classroom learning with hands-on consultative projects for social impact organizations, allowing students to apply management learnings and analytical expertise to the real challenges that social impact companies and programs face as they operate and scale within markets. Consultative projects will be for organizations and companies in sectors including corporate philanthropy, social enterprise, and nonprofit financial innovation. The lectures, assignments, and readings for this class will focus on social innovation, impact finance, outcome measurement, models for scale, and root cause analysis. Students interested in consulting, social innovation and leadership, and social finance will benefit from this class. Students will have the opportunity to express preferences among all potential projects. Each organization and project will require a high level of work and professional-grade deliverables to be presented to the client and evaluated by the professor. For the fall of 2019, projects will include a range of engagements focused on market analysis, financial innovation and products, outcome or impact assessment, best-practices research and guidance. Potential clients for project assignments include: Allstate, Humana Foundation, Resurrection Project, YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago, Chicago Community Trust, Voice for Girls (India), Injustice Watch, and more.
